Requirements for Qualification in the GMP Environment

In the GMP-regulated environment, it is essential to demonstrate that production facilities reliably produce products of the required quality – and to do so consistently. The key to this lies in a well-thought-out planning process that begins with the User Requirements Specification (URS).

Already in this early phase, the requirements for documentation and data integrity are defined – as well as the decision whether documentation will be digital or paper-based. A thorough risk assessment identifies potential weaknesses in the plant design and ensures that possible sources of error are recognized and eliminated before construction and installation.

Supplier evaluation also plays a central role: only those who demonstrate their capabilities during audits can ensure that the requirements specified in the specifications are met.

Special attention is given to computerized systems, which are subject to the provisions of Annex 11. They must be thoroughly tested and qualified before commissioning. After completing all qualification phases – Design Qualification (DQ), Installation Qualification (IQ), Operational Qualification (OQ), and Performance Qualification (PQ) – the results are summarized in the Master Qualification Report.

Depending on the criticality of the facility, regular reviews are conducted to ensure the qualified state is maintained in the long term. Additionally, clearly defined maintenance, calibration, and training programs ensure that the equipment remains functional and that personnel are always up to date.
