More and more people and companies are developing an awareness that their actions impact the ecosystems in which we all live. With this realization, the willingness to take responsibility and actively shape change is also growing. Regenerative economics – approaches that give back more to nature than they take from it – are becoming not only a central task but also an innovative field. It requires creativity, interdisciplinary thinking, and continuous learning. Politics, industry, science, and society must work together to develop solutions – not through finger-wagging, but through inspiring success stories that show what is possible.

We are part of complex ecosystems, whose balance has often been negatively affected by human actions in the past. At the same time, nature demonstrates with its adaptability and resilience how valuable its principles can be for regenerative economics. The key question is therefore not whether ecosystems will adapt, but whether we as humanity act actively enough to remain part of these systems. Regeneration is a design task that requires innovation, collaboration, and new ways of thinking. Experts from industry, science, and the trade press discussed this in a World Café workshop during the Bürkert Fachpressetage and developed initial approaches to solutions.

Regenerative economics means much more than zero impact. It involves giving back more to nature than humans take from it. This requires holistic, cyclical thinking that always considers one’s actions within the overall context (including within different ecosystems). Holistic responsibility is also crucial to enable regeneration. Sustainability is a significant step on the way to the goal, but companies must not stop there. Current developments show that increasing pragmatism is driving sustainable behavior among people and companies. Success stories about regenerative approaches can do much more to inspire than moral finger-wagging. Information and training based on success stories can make the benefits of regenerative economics tangible and motivate positive action. Authentic communication is essential for this. Companies must not misuse regenerative economics for image polishing.

Regenerative Economics in Industry

Especially in the (process) industry, there is often a lack of role models for regenerative economics. However, numerous initiatives exist that can serve as starting points and sources of inspiration. The fluidics experts at Bürkert are also active here and have defined regenerative economics as their guiding star. The company understands that transitioning from sustainability to regeneration is not a state but a developmental process. The crucial thing is the direction and that companies begin to think and act regeneratively. An important role here is played by service, for example. Building relationships creates responsibility that extends far beyond the product lifecycle and generates continuous value creation instead of one-time transactions. Service helps extend the lifecycle of products and is thus a central lever for regenerative economics. Additionally, the fluidics experts invest in biodiversity projects and seek out new solutions with a global, interdisciplinary team of employees.

Creating Framework Conditions for the Economy

In the current economic and (geo-)political situation, it becomes clear that industry and the economy alone cannot manage the regenerative transition. For example, it is conceivable that companies will, through primarily disruptive influences such as protectionism (see rare earths), initiate new patterns of action in the medium term that bring about positive long-term changes. However, clear political guidelines and incentive systems are generally needed to provide companies with the necessary framework conditions for investment security. Furthermore, science should take a leadership role and conduct fact-based education, which is as urgently needed as it is lengthy. Proper associations could also push forward change through pro-regenerative lobbying. These thoughts show that ultimately, only the interplay of various actors will bring long-term success. Georg Stawowy, CEO of Bürkert Fluid Control Systems, summarizes: “Society also needs a consensus on a guiding star for regenerative action that endures beyond electoral periods, not only regionally or nationally but ideally internationally.”

Key Theses from the World Café Workshop

1. Regeneration as a New Guiding Principle
Economics must go beyond mere sustainability: regeneration means giving back more to nature than we take from it.
2. Holistic Thinking for Genuine Transformation
Systemic and cyclical thinking are indispensable to integrate ecological and social aspects into economic decisions.
3. Service Models as a Key to Resource Conservation
Service-oriented approaches extend product lifecycles, reduce resource consumption, and build trust.
4. Cooperation as a Strategic Advantage
Local networks and partnerships share resources, simplify processes, and strengthen regional economies.
5. Politics and Science as Pioneers
Clear political incentives and a fact-based leadership role for science are crucial to accelerate the shift toward a regenerative economy.
6. Strong Networks for Systemic Change
Cross-disciplinary networks with clear decision-making structures are necessary to make lobbying for regeneration effective.
7. Credibility over Greenwashing
Regeneration requires genuine conviction. Communication must show stance and build trust – beyond mere PR.
