Getinge develops AI-supported OR planning further with Torin Plan Optimizer

Getinge announces today the market launch of the Torin Plan Optimizer, an AI-supported solution for decision-making in surgical planning. The solution goes beyond predicting procedure duration and optimizes planning by considering additional dependencies – including the availability of operating rooms, surgeons, and OR teams, as well as postoperative capacities. By making potential bottlenecks visible early on, the solution helps hospitals better utilize existing OR capacities, reduce disruptions in the OR schedule, and ensure reliable surgical care.

Hospitals are increasingly under pressure to treat more patients surgically despite staff shortages and rising demand for medical care. When procedure durations, available operating rooms, surgeons, OR teams, and postoperative care requirements are not aligned, it can lead to delays, cancellations, and last-minute changes to the OR schedule.

“We are committed to driving innovations that support connected, data-driven, and efficient surgical care,” says Charlotte Enlund, Vice President of Digital Health Solutions at Getinge. “Our approach to AI deployment continues to focus on healthcare professionals at the center of decision-making. AI complements their expertise with reliable insights that help teams use existing resources more effectively and make surgical planning more dependable.”

The Torin Plan Optimizer analyzes historical and operational data from a hospital to support planning by considering multiple interdependent factors. These include the expected procedure duration, the availability of surgeons and OR teams, patient-specific requirements for postoperative care, and bed availability. AI-generated recommendations assist teams in evaluating different options and adjusting the surgical schedule. The final decision on planning always remains with the healthcare professionals.

“In surgical planning, numerous interdependent priorities must be balanced. This makes it difficult to manually oversee the full impact of individual planning decisions,” says Matthias Rath, Director of Product Management & Business Development OR Solutions at Getinge. “AI-supported decision-making helps teams identify potential bottlenecks before they cause disruptions. This allows more time to adjust the surgical schedule, better utilize existing OR capacities, and contribute to ensuring that patient care proceeds as planned.”

Torin Plan Optimizer was developed for integration into existing hospital infrastructures and is part of Getinge’s digital ecosystem, which connects perioperative workflows from preoperative planning to postoperative care.
