Flow measurement with savings potential increases efficiency

Reliable distinction between product and detergent

The inline flow measuring device operates according to the patented SAW process (Surface Acoustic Waves) and reliably detects media changes. An advantage of this method is that there are no fittings or constrictions, and consequently no dead spaces in the measuring tube. (Source: Bürkert Fluid Control Systems)

The FLOWave from Bürkert can determine additional measurement values such as mass flow and density, besides flow rate and temperature. This allows the cleaning process to be optimized, as the sensor can distinguish between rinsing medium and product, significantly reducing waste and wastewater load.

When manufacturing cosmetics, as well as in the pharmaceutical, biotech, or food sectors, strict quality and hygiene guidelines must be adhered to. Therefore, production equipment must be regularly cleaned during batch or product changes. At the same time, the production process should run as efficiently as possible. Those who rely on the right technology can exploit savings potentials, for example in cleaning effort. Here, the FLOWave technology scores, which uses acoustic surface waves (Surface Acoustic Waves, SAW) for inline liquid flow measurement (see Image 1). In addition to measuring flow rate and temperature, the same sensor can also determine other values such as mass flow and density, and detect gas bubbles and particles via the density factor. This allows the cleaning process to be optimized, as the sensor can distinguish between rinsing medium and product, significantly reducing waste and wastewater load.

Maintenance-free measuring principle

The measuring principle operates entirely without measuring substance-contacting sensor elements in the measuring tube. This offers several advantages: no elements in the measuring tube mean no leaks, no material incompatibilities, or maintenance, and there is no pressure drop, plus cleaning is simple. In the process, the sensor behaves like a piece of pipe. It is made of high-quality stainless steel, with no dead zones, and all hygiene requirements are met. This is confirmed by several certificates such as ASME BPE and EHEDG. The measurement range is 0.3 l/min at nominal size DN 8 up to 3,300 l/min at DN 80. All common process connections such as Tri-Clamp, flange, or SMS screw connection are available. Installation is straightforward: the relatively lightweight device can be easily installed and removed, and recalibration can be conveniently performed by one person. Communication with the higher-level control system is optionally possible via Profibus DP, Profinet, or an analog 4...20 mA interface.
