With a series of ten studies, the Fraunhofer AI Progress Center demonstrates the potential benefits of AI applications across various sectors of industrial production and services. As part of the Cyber-Valley research consortium, the interdisciplinary research teams from the Fraunhofer Institutes IPA and IAO support companies in advancing AI-based applications and their commercialization.

Potential recognized, implementation overlooked? Artificial intelligence and machine learning are key technologies for the future of Germany's digital location. However, their introduction and implementation into practical, economically usable applications require a strategic transformation on multiple levels. The AI Progress Center of the Fraunhofer Institutes for Production Technology and Automation IPA and for Work Economics and Organization IAO supports companies as part of the Cyber-Valley consortium at the interface between application-oriented science and excellent research, helping to develop innovative AI applications and human-centered AI solutions.

Understanding technology, empowering people, designing processes

With the series of studies "Learning Systems," the AI Progress Center provides insights into the potentials and practical application possibilities of AI. The ten publications introduce overarching AI topics such as reliability, explainability (xAI), or cloud-based platforms, and also examine detailed use cases and implementation strategies. The focus areas are knowledge work, construction industry, manufacturing, and customer service.

The series of studies includes the following publications and thematic focuses:

- Cloud-based AI platforms
Opportunities and limitations of services for "Machine Learning as a Service"
- Human-centered AI applications in manufacturing
Practical experiences and guidelines for operational implementation strategies
- Reliable AI
Using AI in safety-critical industrial applications
- AI in the construction industry
Application possibilities for planning, realization, and operation of buildings
- Explainable AI in practice
Application-oriented evaluation of xAI methods
- AI in customer data management
Insights into application possibilities
- AI to prevent identity fraud
From customer identification to consumer fraud prevention
- Designing customer service empathetically
Using intelligent systems for user-centered customer interaction
- Sensitive technology
Practical use of neuroergonomics and brain-computer interfaces
- AI for knowledge work
Algorithms, models, and technologies to support knowledge work

"Our goal is to develop AI applications with and for companies that people trust and accept. Only when humans interact intuitively with new technologies and collaborate trustfully can their full potential be realized," emphasizes Dr. Matthias Peissner, head of the AI Progress Center at Fraunhofer IAO. The series of studies therefore particularly focuses on topics such as reliability, explainability (xAI), technologies, and implementation strategies. "Low-threshold offerings for companies have always been a cornerstone of the AI Progress Center as a transfer institution of Cyber Valley. We also fulfill this requirement with the series of studies," adds Prof. Marco Huber, head of the AI Progress Center at Fraunhofer IPA.

The studies are now available for download on the website of the AI Progress Center. In the coming weeks, the two Fraunhofer institutes will present the individual studies in various formats such as press releases, social media, and blog posts. English translations of the studies will follow in the upcoming weeks.
