Whether for transportation or for suction and clamping: vacuum is used to handle a wide variety of workpieces – from delicate microchips to large glass sheets. The multi-stage vacuum generators of the ZL series from SMC significantly improve the ratio between air consumption and suction performance – and have now been expanded with the particularly energy-saving ZL3 and ZL6 series. Thanks to their lower weight and higher suction volume flow, they significantly increase the efficiency of vacuum applications compared to previous models.

If vacuum generators are to be mounted on moving robot parts or applications require a high suction volume flow, multi-stage vacuum generators of the ZL series from the pneumatic and automation specialist SMC are the solution. The portfolio has now been expanded with the ZL3 and ZL6 series, which are equipped with energy-saving functions and suitable for cost-effective, lightweight machine designs. As a result, the ZL series now includes a total of three versions with maximum suction volume flows of 100 l/min (ZL1), 300 l/min (ZL3), and 600 l/min (ZL6; each ANR). Additionally, compared to a single-stage nozzle design, this series offers an increased suction volume flow of up to 250 percent*1.

Powerful lightweight designs

The high suction performance of the multi-stage vacuum generators ZL3/ZL6 ensures shorter cycle times, increases output, and makes processes in pick-and-place applications safer and more efficient. The weight of the assembly has been reduced by up to 44 percent compared to previous models (e.g., ZL3: 390 g; previous ZL212: 700 g). This weight reduction, among other things, results in a lower inertia moment when using the vacuum generator in moving applications (e.g., robot arm) and simultaneously increases dynamics while maintaining the same application and stability. The new "lightness" in both the housing and overall weight enables compact and cost-effective machines that can leverage their advantages, for example, in transporting workpieces.

Energy-saving efficiency

All models of the ZL series feature a new nozzle design with a 3-stage diffuser, which more than doubles the suction volume flow at constant compressed air supply. The design is available in simple (ZL1, ZL3) or double (ZL6) versions. Thanks to the reduced air consumption, this saves energy costs compared to previous models (ZL3: 135 l/min; previous ZL212: 150 l/min) and also increases application efficiency.

The ZL3/ZL6 series can also be equipped with an optional digital vacuum switch with energy-saving function. This allows vacuum generation on demand and automatically switches off the compressed air supply when the desired vacuum level is reached. This creates a self-regulating control loop, reducing air consumption by 90 percent. Vacuum generation can also be controlled via optional pilot valves mounted on the housing. The numerous advantages include: lower energy costs, increased efficiency through shortened cycle times, greater safety through sensor monitoring, and suitability for Industry 4.0 applications thanks to remote maintenance.

Versatile all-round devices

The use of the multi-stage vacuum generators themselves is also convenient: an adjustment needle to dampen the blow-off impulse allows, among other things, gentle release of sensitive components or workpieces. This not only offers increased process safety but also precise parts handling through a system tailored to customer requirements. The double threaded connection (vacuum connection 1/2") allows direct connection of the vacuum generator without additional T-fittings, saving costs and assembly time. Furthermore, simple, centralized vacuum generation for multiple vacuum applications is enabled. An optional adapter for mounting from below is available if needed, for example, for machine upgrades without changing the mounting holes (ZL1 and ZL3).

The application spectrum of the all-round devices of the ZL1/ZL3/ZL6 series includes industries such as packaging and food, automotive, or life sciences. They are used, for example, for transporting glass sheets (e.g., ZL1), for suction or clamping of tools and workpieces (e.g., ZL3), as well as for transporting cartons (e.g., ZL6). Due to their low weight, they are particularly suitable for mounting on moving robot components or applications.
