COLANDIS Rental Clean Room – a success story

As a basis for new business models, to bridge a breakdown, or just for a specific project – these are among the reasons why the rental cleanroom of COLANDIS GmbH has been used for years.

The first deployment in August 2009 helped the customer maintain their production during the period of breakdown repair in their cleanroom. Because their products were comparable in type and price. Had they needed to stop production, their customers would have turned to competitors, and the costs of regaining customers would have been unpredictable. In comparison, bridging with a rented cleanroom was planable and flexible.

Currently, the company's customers mostly need the rental cleanroom to test whether pure production could be a long-term business expansion. The manufacturing process is perfectly under control, but the aspect of manufacturing under pure conditions is uncharted territory. To evaluate whether and how this can work, COLANDIS supports with the rental cleanroom as well as – if needed – with consulting and training around logistics, cleaning, and behavior.

Most of the rental cleanrooms are used in Germany, but already now, the share of use in the European area is 22%, and demand is increasing. Use outside of Europe is unfortunately not profitable due to high logistics costs.

Initially, there was one system, but now up to seven rental systems are available. Over time, COLANDIS has supported approximately 60 different customers at least once with a rental cleanroom. Three customers order regularly for individual projects because they do not yet need to manufacture continuously in a cleanroom and therefore investing in a permanent solution is not currently economical for them.

For a specific (project) period, a cleanroom is needed? Within a few days after order receipt and after clarifying all logistical details, the rental cleanroom is on-site at the customer's location and is quickly assembled and put into operation by technicians. Thus, the customer has a cleanroom with air cleanliness class ISO 5 according to DIN EN ISO 14644-1 (depending on processes and personnel) with 4 m width, 2.5 (or 3) m height, and 5 m length. For three customers, the rental cleanroom was even extended to 14 and 20 meters, with processes arranged accordingly and staff trained. The arrangement of processes and staff training are important because the cleanroom is horizontally supplied with pure air, so critical processes take place near the filter wall – the cleanest place in the rental cleanroom.

COLANDIS GmbH was also able to use its system for unusual deployments. For example, this rental cleanroom was built at the company, and the garage was quickly converted into a cleanroom. The existing cleanrooms were too small for the customer's product, so a temporary expansion of the area was necessary. Large parts weighing more than 3 tons were introduced. Another significant component weighing over 3 tons was cleaned and prepared for the customer thanks to the filter wall and a system retrofit.

The rental cleanroom is mainly used in technical areas. Due to cleaning requirements, it is only conditionally suitable for medical applications.

There are no time restrictions. From a minimum duration of one month, the rental cleanroom can be rented for any period – whether 3 months or 3 years. This is left to the customer's discretion.
