Sustainability Report 2023 – Step by Step into a Greener Future
Even after 60 years in the filtration industry, Camfil continues to be committed to clean air to protect people, processes, and the environment. The company has now published its Sustainability Report 2023, which emphasizes the importance of clean indoor air. This is also against the backdrop of the fact that an estimated 99% of the world's population breathes air that exceeds the pollutant limits set by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Mark Simmons, President and CEO of Camfil, said: "For six decades, we have been developing innovative technologies for clean air. Now, we are increasingly focusing on further optimizing the ecological footprint of our products. Through a systematic analysis of the product lifecycle and binding sustainability standards, we ensure that every breath of fresh air we deliver is as environmentally friendly as possible."
The implementation of sustainability standards into operational processes in 2023 was an important milestone for the company on its path to a greener future. Camfil's sustainability standards are based on four pillars: "Clean Air Everywhere," "Care for People," "Clean Operations," and "Resource Conservation."
This strategic framework serves as a guide for the company in current and future initiatives. Having already joined the UN Global Compact, the sustainability initiative of the United Nations, 15 years ago, Camfil has also been committed to the Science Based Targets Initiative since 2023. This means the company commits to adhering to industry-specific CO2 reduction targets that, according to current scientific knowledge, are necessary to achieve the climate protection goals of the Paris Agreement.
In preparation for legislative initiatives such as the EU Directive on Corporate Sustainability Reporting (CSRD), Camfil also conducted a comprehensive inventory of its manufacturing plants and production processes. The goal was to evaluate their individual ecological footprints and ensure compliance with the CSRD requirements.
Camfil AB is now also a member of the EcoVadis network, the world's largest provider of sustainability ratings for companies. Regarding this, Anne-Marie von Salis, Vice President of Sustainability at Camfil, said: "Participation in the EcoVadis program underscores our commitment to transparency and accountability in all our sustainability practices. With EcoVadis, we can better assess our sustainability performance, identify areas for improvement, and effectively communicate our progress to stakeholders."
Among the environmental achievements of the company in 2023 are:
- Increase in sales of filters with Eurovent energy efficiency class A or A+ by 26%
- Saving 110 tons of CO2 through switching from pure road transport to intermodal transportation in the USA
- Switching to LED lighting at three production sites and reducing electricity consumption by 540 MWh annually
- Installing a geothermal cooling system at a plant in Malaysia and reducing electricity consumption by 840 MWh annually
- Reducing CO2 emissions by 13% per packaging carton by switching to environmentally friendly shipping packaging
Camfil's commitment to sustainability is also reflected in the following product innovations:
- TurboPulse: Innovative pulse filter technology with 20% lower initial pressure loss
- CamCarb XG: Molecular filter cartridge to reduce gaseous contaminants, consuming up to 35% less energy than the previous model
- AirImage-COR: Real-time corrosion monitor that prevents environmental damage caused by corrosion, resource-intensive repairs, and shortened maintenance intervals
Camfil's sustainability approach aligns with the vision "Clean Air – a Human Right." This guiding principle motivates the company to continuously seek sustainable solutions that not only protect the environment but also uphold the fundamental right of all people to clean air.
