The location of the Mewa Group in Meißenheim has expanded: In addition to the existing operation for the care of workwear, the Europe-wide textile service provider has built a new facility for the processing of cleanroom textiles. Covering approximately 1,700 square meters, it can now process up to 1,000 garments per hour at full capacity. The expansion has created 50 new jobs. Today marked the official opening.

The guests were welcomed by Björn Scheel, COO of the Mewa Group, Anton Hardt (Plant Manager of Mewa Meißenheim), and Hugo Wingert, local mayor of Meißenheim. They, together with Dr. Christian Funk (CEO of the Mewa Group), Dominik Niemeyer (Commercial Site Manager of Mewa Meißenheim), and Timo Speck (Managing Director of Mewa Cleanroom), provided information about the site expansion and the strategic investment in the region and the demanding market segment. From the tri-border area, industrial customers throughout the German-speaking region will now be supplied with cleanroom clothing through comprehensive service.

With the opening of the new laundry facility at the Meißenheim site, the Europe-wide corporate group has expanded its production capacities for this specialized future field. Cleanroom clothing is used when even the smallest particles could impair the quality of products or manufacturing, such as in the pharmaceutical industry, medical technology, or semiconductor production.

The cleanroom laundry was established on an investment of over EUR 17 million across 1,700 square meters, directly neighboring the existing operational buildings. As an independent, state-of-the-art facility, it is tailored to the requirements of highly sensitive production environments. "The investment in the cleanroom segment was a strategic decision within our European growth strategy," explains CEO Dr. Christian Funk. Already with the start of construction in 2024, the Mewa Group expanded its business field by integrating the cleanroom specialist Mikroclean.

"At Mewa, the overall package fits. The comprehensive service supports cleanroom customers along their entire value chain and offers everything from a single source," explains Timo Speck, Managing Director DACH of MEWA Cleanroom GmbH. "We not only deliver cleanroom clothing and accessories but also handle the cleaning of their cleanrooms and train the responsible personnel in their operations." The investment decision also signifies a regional commitment to the existing site in Meißenheim, Baden-Württemberg, where Mewa already employs 318 people. The expansion has created around 50 new jobs.

State-of-the-art cleanroom laundry: Sustainable construction as part of the concept

Responsible resource management also played an important role in planning the new building. The construction project combines technological performance with a clear focus on sustainability and efficiency. The building was constructed according to the criteria of the Gold Standard of the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) and aims to produce not only resource-efficiently but also as climate-neutral as possible. This is ensured by efficient processes and modern energy solutions that complement the building concept, including a dedicated photovoltaic system. "Furthermore, the new operation relies on efficient, digitized processes through automated control systems and RFID chips. This ensures that workflows are transparent, secured, and documented at all times," explains COO Björn Scheel. In the new laundry, up to 7,000 items can be processed per shift at full capacity. In addition to ISO-certified laundry and care, decontamination, and sterilization, the comprehensive service for cleanroom clothing also includes textile inspection and quality assurance, as well as replacement of worn items before the goods are delivered to customers in compliance with standards by the service driver.
