MedGuard®: more than packaging – an integrated system for safe and sustainable sterilization barrier solutions

SÜDPACK Medica provides a comprehensive packaging system with MedGuard®, designed to support manufacturers in medical technology, pharmaceuticals, and life sciences in selecting and implementing their packaging concepts. Under MedGuard, the packaging specialist combines different material structures with process expertise to create validated packaging solutions that focus on performance, product and process safety, and not least, sustainability throughout the entire lifecycle of the packaging.

With MedGuard, SÜDPACK Medica pursues a systematic approach: instead of individual materials, customers receive an integrated solution consisting of bottom and lid films or pouch systems, paired with production and application knowledge, as well as a structured assessment of sustainability performance. The goal is reliable performance throughout the entire lifecycle of the packaging – from development and qualification to commercial scale-up. "More than packaging. It’s a system." Quickly find the right material combination: Product Navigator

With the Product Navigator, SÜDPACK Medica supports material selection in an increasingly complex environment. Users can evaluate suitable material combinations based on specific application requirements and common sterilization methods – such as steam, EtO, or gamma – thereby reducing development times and minimizing risks in packaging development. Manufactured in cleanroom conditions

The MedGuard portfolio includes flexible and rigid packaging systems – from robust thermoformed films to pouch and bag solutions. Special lid materials are produced in certified cleanroom environments to meet requirements for clean production and validated sterile packaging (e.g., according to ISO 11607).

Strong partnerships across the entire value chain

For consistent system compatibility, SÜDPACK Medica collaborates with selected manufacturers of paper and lid materials as well as leading packaging machine manufacturers. This enables targeted design, testing, and optimization of seal performance and opening behavior for the machinery platforms used in industry.

Comprehensive in-house laboratory capabilities also allow precise measurement of mechanical, thermal, and functional film properties to support customer-specific requirements and validation processes.

Technical validation at the Ochsenhausen testing center

Additionally, SÜDPACK Medica offers its customers the option to conduct seal tests with MedGuard films combined with various lid materials at the testing center in Ochsenhausen. These tests enable targeted evaluation of seal windows, peel performance, and process robustness – supporting packaging development before commercial scale-up. When necessary, SÜDPACK Medica also coordinates joint optimization tests with the customer and their machinery suppliers.

Sustainability based on lifecycle analyses

Sustainability is also embedded in the MedGuard strategy: The sustainability department at SÜDPACK Medica conducts screening LCAs among other activities to quickly obtain environmental assessments based on secondary data and ensure that the packaging systems deliver the best sustainability performance in their class – without compromising safety, functionality, or regulatory compliance.
