How much does it cost when a control head stops the line?

Valve automation in hygienic and aseptic process plants

Fluidics expert Bürkert is launching two new solutions for valve automation with the Type 8682 and Type 8683 control heads. A replacement device can be commissioned without interrupting the process, a shared adapter system connects valves from different manufacturers, and a parameterizable function ensures reproducible, resource-efficient and monitored cleaning.

With the Type 8682 and Type 8683 control heads, Bürkert Fluid Control Systems is launching two new solutions for valve automation in hygienic and aseptic process systems. They address the points at which plant availability is not affected by major failures, but by the time required to replace devices, restart operations and clean, as well as by the batch that cannot run during this time. Almost half of the manufacturers concerned experience six to ten unplanned interruptions per week (Censuswide on behalf of Fluke, 2025). A replacement device can be commissioned directly at the valve in teach-in mode without interrupting the ongoing process: Device replacement thus moves from the category of “unplanned downtime” to that of “ongoing maintenance.” Both control head types have been available since June 2026.

One adapter system for all valves

Type 8682 automates single-seat and butterfly valves, while Type 8683 additionally provides full functionality for double-seat valves. Both use identical, standardized adapters for valves of different designs and from different manufacturers—the existing valve inventory does not need to be replaced. Type 8683 also enables fully parameterizable cleaning with cyclical seat movements: targeted use of media, reproducible processes and complete monitoring. Two LED indicators signal the valve position and maintenance requirements directly on the device. For maintenance, this means fewer device types in stock, one operating concept instead of many, and no more compatibility checks before each system expansion.
