The cleanroom specialist COWA, headquartered in Gottmadingen and Zurich with 12 additional locations in Germany and Switzerland, is now adding a virtual solution to its cleanroom training offerings. In close cooperation with mycleanroom.de, the cleanroom professionals are being trained using an innovative VR solution.

Originally, a fully functional and very real cleanroom was planned for the COWA new building next to the company headquarters in Gottmadingen. Instead, the renowned company with around 3,750 employees is taking a step further in the spirit of digitalization.

In close collaboration with mycleanroom.de, the universal cleanroom agency, COWA will now conduct cleanroom training virtually with the help of VR glasses, in addition to traditional face-to-face training. It's easier and better than ever: put on the glasses, experience the necessary steps, and then implement them yourself. True to the motto "learn faster," the performance is evaluated immediately afterward.

Increasing training demand as a driving force for development

The increase in efficiency was the basis for developing the special VR solution by mycleanroom.de. From their daily business, the experts at the cleanroom agency knew that more and more cleanrooms are being built, which also increases the need for training additional personnel. The growing automation, such as in semiconductor technology, also makes it necessary for more service staff to enter the cleanrooms for maintenance. It is also essential for this group to undergo qualified training that demonstrates the correct behavior in the cleanroom. The consequences of contamination in cleanrooms can be fatal.

The new solution, mycleanroomVR, is a wonderful addition to COWA's training concept, which perfectly combines fun, learning, and monitoring of learning success. Additionally, it makes conducting training extremely flexible, as all equipment fits into a transport case and a bag, making it usable anytime and anywhere.

Start of virtual cleanroom training at COWA

This is also the approach taken by COWA. The expert in cleanroom cleaning has its own VR system and will train its employees at various locations using virtual methods in the future.

Currently, two modules are in use. The first module, "MopUse," focuses on training employees to improve their cleaning efficiency when using a cleanroom mop. The employee puts on the VR glasses, takes the familiar mop handle, and is guided through the correct wiping technique via the glasses and a "red thread" on the virtual cleanroom floor.

Then, the learned skills are immediately applied virtually, and the system provides instant feedback on how effective the cleaning was, whether cross-contamination is possible, how many square meters were cleaned with the wipe, and how much time was spent. The documentation of the training results in a cleanroom-compliant manner is also included. This tool serves both employee training and pre-qualification during the hiring process of new staff.

The second module, "Access," is dedicated to the specific dressing procedure that is mandatory before entering cleanrooms according to ISO and GMP standards, and it trains the proper procedure. The VR software allows for training and exercises under supervision, following the correct sequence of dressing procedures. It includes practice and a final documented test. With mycleanroomVR, it is guaranteed that each participant performs the process at least once at the end of the training, as the process is first explained and guided, then independently executed, and finally tested without aids.

Play instinct as an incentive for performance

This innovative training method using VR glasses appeals to our innate instincts. We are curious and enjoy competing with others. Knowledge can be imparted, new skills learned, and performance demonstrated almost playfully, showing how much one’s own performance improves. Successful completion of the virtual training is documented with a corresponding COWA certificate.

"We are pleased to collaborate with a competent partner like mycleanroom.de. The new training technology makes qualifying our employees simple, quick, and flexible," says Michael Schulze, Managing Director of Service at COWA.

Beyond the collaboration for cleanroom training, the partnership between COWA and mycleanroom.de continues. mycleanroom.de supplies and delivers everything needed for the cleanroom, while COWA has proven expertise in cleaning these specialized rooms.
