motan-colortronic GmbH, Friedrichdorf, a renowned manufacturer of systems for sustainable raw material handling in the fields of injection molding, blow molding, extrusion, compounding, and chemistry, will showcase the latest version of the ULTRABLEND 95 batch dosing and mixing machine during MEDTEC, Stuttgart, from February 26 to 28, 2013.

Manufacturers of medical products made from plastics clearly benefit from using the ULTRABLEND 95. Processing partially extremely expensive raw material blends in a hygienically pure environment (possibly also cleanroom) for medical primary packaging, components, implants, instruments, and devices requires the highest purity, precision, and cost discipline. Aero Pump GmbH, based in Hochheim, Hesse, has now deployed more than 50 of these specialized devices on injection molding machines. As a leading manufacturer of pharmaceutical application systems, the company supplies over 140 million units of dosing and spray pumps for nasal, throat, and ear sprays, as well as eye drop dispensers annually worldwide.

The gravimetrically operating ULTRABLEND system is designed for very high and consistently accurate dosing and mixing of free-flowing raw materials – plastic granulates and additives. It improves process quality and safety and contributes to minimizing production costs. In designing the container components from electropolished stainless steel, motan placed great emphasis on clear functionality, low maintenance, and easy operation in a hygienically pure working environment. The parts are constructed without “dead zones.” Welding seams are fully welded. Consequently, no residual material deposits can form. Contamination of subsequent batches is thus excluded.

ULTRABLEND 95 is particularly suitable for precise small-quantity dosing directly on the injection molding machine, extruder, or blow molding machine. Up to four raw material components are sequentially dosed by weight and recipe accuracy. They are then homogeneously mixed in the downstream mixing chamber (4.5 liters volume) and finally fed into the processing machine’s intake zone. The minimum dosing amount is 3 g per component (900 g batch size). When using two components, a maximum throughput of 260 kg/h is achieved. This gravimetric batch dosing and mixing device is ideal for applications with frequent material changes: all product-contacting parts can be quickly removed and cleaned. During material change, the dosing slide is also locked – material and tiny residual amounts cannot leak or spill. The single-load cell principle compensates for vibrations or oscillations from the machine environment, ensuring high weighing accuracy, which benefits the quality of the final product and its production costs.

The ULTRABLEND peripherals utilize the GRAVInet control system. The color display offers menu-guided operation via the “touch” panel. With integrated Ethernet technology, operation via a motan WEB panel or a PC from any location is also possible. If needed, a feed control can be integrated.
