Hygiene and Aseptic Technique in Cell Culture

Event location:
Elmshorn
Organizer:
Berner International GmbH

Content: The course offers a comprehensive and practical introduction over two days to the importance and implementation of hygiene principles and aseptic working techniques in the cell culture laboratory. It provides solid knowledge on avoiding contamination and safely performing cell culture work. The theoretical part introduces key concepts, legal requirements, and proven principles. Additionally, a system for developing individual laboratory standards is presented. The practical part includes an interactive workshop where theoretical content is applied in practice. Typical sources of error are identified, analyzed, and evaluated directly in the laboratory environment. The aim of the course is to promote systematic and safe working methods, reduce contamination risks, and develop a solid understanding of appropriate hygiene measures. The course content is flexibly scalable—from basic research to GMP-compliant assay laboratories. Learning objectives Theoretical part: Cleanroom systems and their requirements Sterilization and disinfection of reagents and laboratory equipment Surface disinfection and personal protective equipment Function and structure of the laminar flow cabinet Derived working principles as a systematic foundation Causes, types, and prevention of contamination Importance of hygiene in the GMP environment Relevance of hygienic measures for ATMP (Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products) Risk analysis as a basis for informed decisions All content is based on existing knowledge in cell culture techniques. Practical part: Demonstration: Functionality and design of laminar flow cabinets Workshop: Organization and positioning within the safety cabinet Workshop: Handling of special materials in the cabinet Practical troubleshooting with immediate feedback during execution Demonstration with smoke generators to visualize airflows Loading and introducing materials into the sterile cabinet Developing a safe aseptic concept for complex processes
