The electrical engineering company Weidmüller celebrates the opening of a new production building in Suzhou, China. The groundbreaking ceremony for the new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility took place in July of last year. After only eight months of construction, the building was completed by the end of April. With a total of 14,000 square meters of usable space and a modern reception area, the ten-meter-high building represents a significant improvement over the previous manufacturing sites. The project managers incorporated many concepts from Weidmüller’s other production locations. "The layout of the halls enables a much more efficient use of the available space. The production line and warehouse both follow well-defined rules, which makes the transport of goods throughout the space many times more flexible, faster, and easier," explains Thomas Kipke, Head of Global Production at Weidmüller. With an additional 2,500 square meters of open space at the new production site, Weidmüller has extra capacity to continue pursuing and implementing its ideas of lean production and sustainable development on-site in the future.

The project team placed great emphasis on the design of modern workplaces that are intended to help increase productivity as well as creativity and to retain motivated employees within the company. At the same time, Weidmüller in Suzhou has for the first time relied on solar technology as a form of energy generation. This makes the production greener, safer, and more sustainable. The entire IT infrastructure is geared toward security and efficiency. "Our goal is to systematically network all resources—from our manufacturing plants, products, and of course our employees—to develop even smarter solutions for our customers based on this broad foundation," says Lance Zhao, Executive Vice President for the Asia region at Weidmüller.

For Weidmüller, the production site plays a key role within the framework of the global production strategy. The company has been present on-site since 1994 and has evolved from a producer of individual products in the field of connection technology to a provider of intelligent system solutions. Today, it is an important partner for many Chinese companies when it comes to future topics such as industrial automation and digitalization, robotics, connection technology, as well as intelligent logistics, big data analytics, energy management, and solutions for wind turbines.
