Primarily in the food industry, the use of components that must meet strict hygiene guidelines due to possible contact with consumable end products is required. The new clamping connections of the KFG2H-E series from SMC now represent the world's first and so far only EHEDG-certified pneumatic fittings according to Type EL Class I Aux for particularly fast and effective cleaning. They are FDA- and EU-1935/2004-compliant and prevent the accumulation of liquids and dirt thanks to hygienic design made of polished stainless steel – thereby enhancing hygiene and food safety.

To connect systems, machines, or individual components safely and hygienically in the food industry, the used clamping connections must meet high standards: They should be corrosion-resistant against various elements under adverse conditions and enable smooth, hygienic operation. Specifically for applications that are frequently and regularly cleaned and/or come into contact with liquids, the automation specialist SMC has developed the new clamping connections of the KFG2H-E series – the world's first and so far only pneumatic fittings that meet the strict certification of the European Hygienic Engineering and Design Group (EHEDG) according to Type EL Class I Aux. Thanks to compliance with these requirements for components in open processes that are cleaned with liquids (wet) and without disassembly, the fittings can be cleaned especially quickly and effectively, making them an ideal solution for optimized hygiene safety in the food industry.

Hygienic Design for Greater Food Safety

The KFG2H-E series features a polished, stainless steel surface (AISI 316) and open angles that prevent dirt from adhering. Additionally, the blue-colored seals, which are highly visible and detectable, are made from special natural rubber (FKM) and are compressed during assembly by metal fittings that seamlessly integrate into the construction. The fittings meet protection class IP69K, offering the highest protection against dirt and moisture. This hygienic design particularly prevents the accumulation of liquids, which is advantageous during frequent cleaning processes. Suitable for media such as water, steam, and compressed air, with a temperature resistance of -5 to +150°C (no freezing), and operating pressures between -100 kPa and 1 MPa, the new fittings are ideal for use under the most challenging conditions in food applications.

Safe Operation Thanks to EHEDG and FDA Compliance

The series also meets the strict requirements of EU Directive 1935/2004 and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) § 177.2600. The latter, as a government authority, controls all goods marketed in the USA, making the specifications binding for German companies exporting there. The confirmed compliance of the KFG2H-E series with EU standards, FDA regulations, and the unique certification of a pneumatic fitting according to EHEDG guidelines qualifies it for safe use in the international food environment – and everywhere where manufacturing and/or packaging companies must meet the highest standards of hygiene and food safety.
