A lot of technology in a small space – that was the requirement for GMP-compliant production of cytostatics in a hospital. Particularly tricky was the equipment of the cleanroom with different differential pressure values.

Modern hospital pharmacies and clinics are increasingly taking on the production of cytostatics to create individually tailored medicines for their patients. The Lübben Spreewald Clinic, one of the locations of the Dahme-Spreewald Hospital, has had a new, two-story hospital pharmacy since the beginning of February this year, which houses a 130 m2 cleanroom for the sterile production of medicines, including cytostatics. Wisag, one of the leading German industrial service providers, was responsible as the general contractor for the entire cleanroom expansion of the hospital pharmacy. Included in the project: employees from Wisag Building and Industrial Services Central Germany, Dresden branch.

"Cleanroom technology is an important tool in healthcare for quality assurance. Only with sterile rooms can the high hygiene and safety requirements be met. The cleanroom was built according to EU-GMP guidelines for the intended pharmaceutical processes in the hospital. A particular challenge in this project was equipping the room with different differential pressure values," explains Frederic Irmscher, the responsible project manager at Wisag.

For this, the individual departments of the cleanroom must be completely sealed off, and the control technology must be perfectly coordinated. Additionally, the cleanroom is relatively small compared to the total area of the hospital pharmacy, yet it requires a great deal of technical equipment. Accommodating all of this was the biggest challenge for the staff.
