For suction, transfer, pulverization, or to promote liquid media such as cleaning or cooling agents, process pumps are used industry-wide. These are increasingly subjected to high demands: from small space and weight requirements to reliability and process safety, up to high performance with low energy consumption at the same time. With the new PA5000 series made of polypropylene (PP) in a compact design, SMC offers a process pump that meets these extensive requirements – among other things thanks to the lightweight yet durable PP housing and a design that not only significantly saves space but also enhances process safety. Additionally, the process pump is optionally available in automatically controlled or pneumatically controlled versions.

Whether in water treatment, pulp, paper, or chemical industries, in semiconductor technology, machine tools, or in printing, coloring, or coating applications: process pumps cover a wide range of applications in handling liquid media across various sectors. To enable always reliable, high-performance, energy-efficient, and space-saving operation, SMC has developed its process pump of the PA5000 series in a compact design. The materials in contact with media, which come into contact with water, acids, or alkaline liquids, are made among others of polypropylene (PP), which not only offers durability but also benefits in weight. Moreover, the specialist for pneumatic and electrical automation has designed it so that there are no sliding parts in areas with media contact. The delivery volume has also been increased, while the compact process pump operates more energy-efficiently at the same time.

Lightweight for Limited Space

With dimensions of 185 mm (H) x 134 mm (W) x 202 mm (D), the PA5000 series lives up to its name as a compact model: compared to the standard product, the height has been reduced by 30%, the width by 23%, and the depth by 8%. This reduces the volume by half (from 10,000 cm³ to 5,000 cm³) and the installation area by almost a third (from 383 cm² to 270 cm²), making it, together with the polypropylene (PP) housing material, a true lightweight at only 3 kg. Process engineers can install the new PA5000 series even in tight applications, saving overall space and weight, thus enabling particularly small machine designs.

Efficient Power Performer

The reduction in size and weight does not negatively impact performance – on the contrary: compared to standard products, the delivery volume of the new process pump has been increased for connection sizes 1/2" to 53 l/min (+6%) and for 3/4" to 63 l/min (+26%). Despite the increase in performance, the PA5000 series in a compact design is an energy-saving marvel in compressed air consumption. For example, at a flow rate of 45 l/min, this could be reduced by up to 53% (connection size 3/4") and 36% (connection size 1/2"). Users thus receive not only a solution that provides additional performance but also saves energy and costs thanks to its low power consumption – a win-win for the wallet and the climate.

Reliable Over the Long Term

Thanks to its well-thought-out construction, the PA5000 series made of polypropylene features high abrasion resistance and low particle generation, as there are no sliding parts in media contact areas. This facilitates cleaning, enabling simple and quick maintenance, and overall can achieve a lifespan of at least 50 million cycles – a significant gain in process safety through fewer malfunctions, as well as savings in both time and costs.

Users can also choose between an automatic and a pneumatically controlled version. The latter allows for simple control of the suction performance with an external switching valve, maintaining a constant cycle operation even with low flow or operating pressure, or when gas is introduced. Additionally, since the mounting distances of the PA5000 made of polypropylene match those of models made of aluminum and stainless steel, interchangeability is maintained.
