Single-use mop versus reusable mop

Key factors influencing the success of cleaning activities today are primarily the available time, as well as the effectiveness and efficiency of the cleaning agents and equipment used. Since in the cleanroom sector, time and costs must be right, but at the same time the cleaning result to be achieved must be guaranteed, the use of suitable tools is particularly important here. When implementing a cleaning and disinfection concept, it is advisable to evaluate and select appropriate cleaning devices.

Mikroclean possesses extensive knowledge with over 30,000 disposable mop covers processed annually and comparable quantities of other materials, based on which we can examine the topic of floor cleaning in the cleanroom from both a technical and economic perspective. The conclusion is based on the experience of numerous long-term tests in practical use.

For cleaning floor surfaces, the mop remains the recognized standard in cleanroom environments when efficiency in daily use is a priority. The key factors for efficient usability are work pace, the practically achievable cleaning effect, and costs:
– Work pace primarily depends on the mop width, but also on the time required for changing, as well as pre- and post-processing (logistics, cleaning, preparation).
– The cleaning effect depends on the material and quality of the surface, as well as the effectiveness of the cleaning agents used.
– Costs are defined by the required working time, the durability of the mop cover, and the effort involved in cleaning and reprocessing.

Today, three versions of cleaning mops are established:
– The reusable mop is cleaned and packaged by professional cleanroom laundries. After use in cleanroom cleaning, the same reprocessing process is repeated. Typically, a lifespan of about 80 cleaning cycles is assumed per reusable mop.
– A disposable mop, on the other hand, is manufactured ready for use in the cleaning operation. After use, it is disposed of. Reprocessing is hardly possible due to the materials designed for single use, especially for the high demands of cleanroom cleaning.
– The "ready-to-use" disposable mop differs from the standard disposable mop in that it is fully prepared by the manufacturer for immediate use. This includes, besides the cleaning textile, impregnation with suitable cleaning and disinfecting agents.

The question of which model is most suitable for a specific cleanroom cannot be answered in a general way. The factors influencing cleaning efficiency depend individually on the local conditions of each cleanroom. Depending on size, layout, and existing logistics, both a disposable mop with or without ready-to-use preparation and a reusable mop can best fulfill the tasks. The following (+) advantages and (-) disadvantages speak for each system:

Disposable Mop

(including Ready-to-Use)

Reusable Mop

Material quality

(+) Textiles with high-quality fiber quality, large fiber surface, and high capacity for absorbing, storing, and releasing moisture and cleaning agents

(+) Textiles with high-quality fiber quality, large fiber surface, and high capacity for absorbing, storing, and releasing moisture and cleaning agents

Cleaning performance

(-) Slightly lower surface coverage due to thinner materials in single-use

(+) High surface coverage due to thicker, durable materials with large fiber surface

Wear

(+) No signs of wear, consistent quality of textile and impregnation through the use of new products

(-) Risk of decreasing cleaning and moisture retention performance, but high monitoring and control are required in the cleanroom sector based on legal requirements

 Safety

(+) Maximum safety by eliminating sources of error regarding contamination and foreign body entry, especially with Ready-to-Use mops

(-) Higher risk of contamination during reprocessing

 Logistics

(+) No need for textile logistics, usable anytime and anywhere

(-) Logistics for cleaning and reprocessing are required, e.g., within existing clothing logistics

 Resources

(+) Generally reusable outside the cleanroom for subsequent applications with lower requirements

(+) Resource-saving and environmentally friendly through multiple reuse of the textile covers

 Environmental and

Health Protection

(+) Increased safety for areas with health- and environmentally hazardous substances through disposal of used covers

(-) High effort for safe reprocessing of contaminated mop covers

 Application areas / suitability

Suitable for small to medium cleaning areas or as a backup for extraordinary cleaning without logistical effort

Suitable for medium and large areas due to high efficiency in cleaning, as well as when textile logistics are available

Conclusion: The disposable mop has become "fit for the salon" in cleanroom cleaning and convinces with significant advantages!

TIP: Disposable mops are no longer usable after a single use in the cleanroom environment. For coarse pre-cleaning and areas with lower requirements, they can be easily reused after reprocessing. This reduces effort and costs. Exceptions are areas contaminated, e.g., by cytostatics. Mops used there must be properly disposed of without subsequent reuse.
