SÜDPACK Medica presents PharmaGuard at the CPHI in Barcelona
From October 24th to 26th, SÜDPACK Medica will present their latest product development: PharmaGuard, at Stand 61 in Hall 2E during the CPHI in Barcelona. The international event is considered one of the world's largest trade fairs for the pharmaceutical industry – making it an ideal platform to showcase the innovative and, above all, sustainable blister concept for solid applications to a broad professional audience.
With PharmaGuard, the pharmaceutical industry now has a recyclable film solution for blister packaging with excellent properties and a strong component in improving the ecological balance of blister packs. The base and lid films, produced using an innovative coextrusion process, are based on the polymer polypropylene (PP) and are designed as a complete monomaterial solution for feeding into recycling streams. Furthermore, the solution impresses with outstanding material efficiency and significantly conserves resources thanks to the low density of PP, while maintaining high yield. According to a life cycle analysis conducted by Sphera, the packaging concept shows a significantly reduced climate impact (in CO2-eq.) compared to the blister solutions typically used in the market, as well as lower energy and water consumption.
Not only sustainable and safe, but also easy to process
For optimal product protection and maximum stability, the films can be equipped with different barriers and mechanical properties depending on the product to be packaged. In particular, the excellent pharmacopeia-compliant water vapor barrier property across the entire remaining wall thickness of the thermoformed cavity is convincing.
Despite the material-specific features of PP films, SÜDPACK customers also benefit when processing PharmaGuard, as the materials can be processed on existing packaging lines with only minor modifications. The excellent sealing performance of the material ensures the highest packaging quality and safety in a very efficient process. Additional advantages include outstanding deep-drawing properties and a uniform forming behavior of the bottom film. Last but not least, the SÜDPACK solution stands out compared to the currently available PP-based blister films on the market with particularly high transparency.
Exciting workshop on the topic of PP
In the conference area of the CPHI, the two cooperation partners Borealis and SÜDPACK Medica will hold a workshop titled “PP – the committed value chain.” The event will take place on October 24th from 2:15 PM to 2:35 PM in Conference Center 4 of the fair.
The workshop will primarily address how the current carbon emissions and resource waste in the healthcare sector can be tackled through strong collaboration within the value chain. As a concrete example, Jürgen Bodenmüller, Business Development Director of SÜDPACK Medica, will introduce PharmaGuard. The mono-PP blister solution can significantly contribute to reducing the CO2 emissions of pharmaceutical packaging in a safe and efficient manner. Paolo Cavacas, Business Development Manager Healthcare at the plastics manufacturer Borealis, the second-largest producer of polyolefins in Europe, will explain through case studies how feedstock from bio-based or recycled sources can be used without altering the existing approval status of the packaging.
