Red Dot Award for UVC Air Disinfectors by Dr. Hönle AG

The UVC air sterilization device SteriWhite Air Q115 from UV experts has been awarded the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2021.

A jury consisting of 50 international experts, including designers, professors, and journalists, determined the winners of the Red Dot Award for Product Design this year. One of them is the UVC air sterilization device Q115, which was developed in early 2020 by Gräfelfinger-based Dr. Hönle AG together with its subsidiary Sterilsystems GmbH.

According to the jury's reasoning: “[...] The timelessly designed housing is made of powder-coated light steel sheet. The device can be placed on a surface or mounted on the wall. [...] With its unmistakable shape and innovative sterilization technology, which works without chemicals and produces neither ozone nor other harmful substances, SteriWhite Air Q115 meets all the requirements of a modern air sterilizer.”

And indeed, the SteriWhite Air Q115 is much more than just decorative: the highly effective room air sterilizer reliably inactivates germs in the air, whether mold spores, bacteria, or viruses such as SARS CoV-2. The principle is as simple as it is effective: room air is drawn into the interior of the housing by very quiet fans and passed by a UVC low-pressure lamp. The short-wavelength UVC rays destroy the genetic material of microorganisms, preventing them from reproducing. Light traps prevent the escape of UV radiation, so the SteriWhite Air Q115 can be used safely in rooms where people are present. What also sets the UVC air sterilizer apart from other air purifiers is its excellent energy efficiency and the absence of hidden costs: it requires no maintenance until the lamp needs replacing after several years, and filter changes are unnecessary.

“We are very pleased with this award, especially because the SteriWhite Air Q115 was designed entirely in-house, from the technology to the exterior,” says Heiko Runge, Board Member for Sales and Marketing at Dr. Hönle AG. “When COVID-19 emerged on the world stage, our primary goal was to find a solution that could help contain the spread of the virus.” That’s why it was clear that the design should be unobtrusive and timeless so that it would blend well visually into any room, from medical practices to classrooms. The Red Dot Award confirms that this goal has been achieved. The SteriWhite Air Q115 will be on display at the Red Dot Design Museum in Essen starting Thursday, June 24, 2021.
