New pediatric intensive care beds at the University Hospital Bonn
Modular construction as a solution for quick demand
The University Hospital Bonn is expanding its existing building structure to increase pediatric intensive care capacities. In mid-March 2022, Cadolto received the order to plan and realize the building using modular construction.
The new building will be constructed as an extension of the Women's Clinic on the Venusberg Campus 1 in Bonn. The two-story building, with a gross floor area of approximately 5,000 m², will house the following functional areas: on the ground floor, an outpatient clinic with a social-pediatric center (SPZ); on the first floor, a pediatric intensive care unit and nursing station with a capacity of 15 beds. Additionally, the second floor will feature a functional area with four operating rooms, intended for use by the connected Women's Clinic.
Karsten Küßmann, Managing Director of Cadolto Modulbau GmbH: "We are very pleased that, through the speed of our construction method, we could also excel with this project at the University Hospital Bonn. While the 85 modules are assembled in our halls with a maximum degree of prefabrication, the foundation work is carried out on-site. This allows valuable time to be saved in the construction process. We look forward to successful collaboration with all project participants."
The special feature of the project is that it is built between the existing maternity and gynecology building and the main hospital. The challenges posed by the proximity of surrounding clinical areas and the confined construction site are well addressed by modular construction. Thanks to the high degree of prefabrication, construction traffic and noise can be significantly reduced. The project can thus be realized while maintaining the surrounding areas of the university hospital.
The turnkey handover of the modular building to the client is scheduled for the end of 2022.
