New membrane keyboard with USB connection

Thanks to copper, even the smallest electronic components can be integrated directly into the membrane keypad. This makes the flat ribbon cable narrower and directly compatible with USB.

At embedded world 2020, Kundisch presents a new highlight: a membrane keyboard with USB connection that saves costs, space, and time, and is suitable for use in embedded systems.

Kundisch GmbH & Co. KG will showcase its portfolio of innovations for human-machine communication from February 25 to 27, 2020, in Nuremberg. The expert in membrane keyboards and touch systems has developed a membrane keyboard that can be integrated into embedded systems via plug & play over USB. Whereas previously additional electronics were necessary alongside the membrane keyboard, Kundisch has now developed an integrated solution. Thanks to printed electronics, freely configurable keyboard controllers can be directly integrated into the membrane keyboard. This is possible because Kundisch uses copper as the base material for the films. "Copper allows us to solder extremely small components and realize electronics in the membrane keyboard without disruptive lead resistances — this is not possible with silver conductors," explains Gero Jantzen, Head of Electronics at Kundisch. "Today’s industrial applications are typically controlled via embedded systems. USB is the standard here. The ongoing miniaturization also demands the elimination of unnecessary components." With this new technology, membrane keyboards can now be connected directly via USB in the future — additional customer hardware is no longer required.

Full functionality with USB

Three switchable control levels expand the range of up to 64 to 188 function keys. Over 19 macros allow assigning key sequences, simultaneous pressing, or even mouse functions, making it easy to link application-specific machine commands. The USB membrane keyboard can be configured at any time via a PC tool. A password protection ensures system security.
