New Master's program focuses on project-based learning and sustainability
The demand for sustainability competencies in companies is large and continues to grow. With a simultaneous shortage of skilled workers, educational offerings are needed that provide tailored and flexible content while ensuring high quality. At Albstadt-Sigmaringen University of Applied Sciences, a new program addresses these requirements: The new Master's program "Sustainability Studies," which can be completed in three semesters, offers close integration with practice and applied research and is designed to be as flexible as possible to accommodate students from diverse backgrounds. A special feature of the program is that essential coursework can be completed through projects, preferably conducted jointly with companies or organizations. The following will introduce the concept, background, and opportunities for potential students and companies in more detail.
Sustainability – a buzzword that now surrounds us daily. Much is already happening, and at the same time, there is still much to do to secure the livelihoods of future generations and to further advance sustainable development in all areas of life. Not least, economic challenges are linked with numerous opportunities. Both large and small companies are facing increasing demands from customers and are striving to integrate sustainability into various business areas and as a whole. This is increasingly required by national and international guidelines and laws. Current examples include the EU Directive on Corporate Sustainability Reporting (CSRD) and the EU Supply Chain Directive (CSDDD). So-called green skills or sustainability competencies are therefore increasingly in demand. At the same time, qualified personnel with the desired skills are not sufficiently available, and the general shortage of skilled workers worsens the situation. In contrast, there is a vast pool of knowledge at universities, colleges, and research institutes, also on the topic of sustainable development. A more effective transfer between industry and academia is being pursued in Germany, recently for example through the German Agency for Transfer and Innovation (DATI).
The topic of sustainability has also become very important in the field of cleanroom technology. A central aspect is increasing the energy efficiency of cleanrooms and optimizing the processes carried out within them. But the use of sustainable materials, waste reduction, and recycling are also playing an increasingly significant role. The integration of sustainability principles not only aims to improve the ecological balance but also helps strengthen market position and competitiveness.
The new "Sustainability Studies" program at Albstadt-Sigmaringen University of Applied Sciences addresses the needs of companies, students, and transfer. It is a three-semester, project-oriented Master's program. This means that, in addition to the Master's thesis, an entire semester is available for working together with practice or research partners on an extensive project idea related to sustainable issues. According to the university's focus areas, the project should relate to the fields of life sciences, engineering, or computer science. "Sustainability Studies" is aimed at all those who are not only looking for solutions to practical problems but also want to actively shape sustainable development.
In the first semester, the foundational knowledge is established, especially regarding sustainable approaches and the necessary expertise. Specializations can be chosen depending on the project focus. This program is faculty-spanning and promotes interdisciplinary exchange. With this concept, the necessary future skills and sustainability competencies are fostered among students. Additionally, the program emphasizes flexibility. Many contents can be accessed independently of time and place. However, in-person contact is also scheduled with fixed appointments during the semester to ensure that personal and professional exchange is not neglected.
