Medical cooling and freezing cabinets from B Medical Systems receive Energy Star certification

B Medical Systems receives Energy Star certification for multiple models from its product lines for blood management refrigerators, pharmaceutical refrigerators, laboratory freezers, and ultra-low temperature freezers

B Medical Systems (BMS), a globally leading provider of solutions for the cold chain of vaccines and an established manufacturer and distributor of blood management and medical cooling solutions, has received the prestigious Energy Star certification for several models from its product lines for blood management refrigerators, pharmaceutical refrigerators, laboratory freezers, and ultra-low temperature freezers.

The US Environmental Protection Agency has certified the 115V/60Hz refrigerators for blood management, pharmaceutical refrigerators, laboratory freezers, and premium models of ultra-low temperature freezers. The certification confirms the sustainability of the products and demonstrates B Medical Systems' commitment to ensuring that its models have the least possible environmental impact.

Current models from B Medical have at least one version of the Energy Star certification, including U701, U901, B401, B501, B701, B901, F400, F500, F700, F900, P400, P500, P700, and P900.

"We always strive to develop sustainable products," says Luc Provost, CEO of B Medical Systems. "However, this is a significant challenge in the field of medical cooling solutions. Medical cooling devices generally consume a considerable amount of energy. In particular, ultra-low temperature devices are known to be among the most energy-intensive devices in a laboratory."

Ultra-low temperature devices consume approximately 16 to 22 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per day, roughly equivalent to the daily electricity consumption of an average household. This could be translated into about 100 tons of CO2 over the device's lifetime, depending on the energy source. Therefore, energy efficiency in such products has a significant impact.

To assess the environmental friendliness of medical cooling solutions, in addition to energy consumption, the cooling systems and the refrigerants used should also be designed with sustainability in mind. Many refrigerants are harmful to the climate and are known for their significant ozone depletion potential (ODP) and global warming potential (GWP). To make its products even more environmentally friendly, BMS employs advanced technologies that enable innovative cooling systems. These systems operate with natural refrigerants that have little to no GWP and ODP, while still providing optimal cooling performance.

"But that's not all: we will continue to introduce innovations to create even more sustainable products and find new ways to reduce the carbon footprint of our products," Provost continues. "Developing medical cooling and freezing devices that contribute to the fight against climate change is truly an outstanding engineering achievement, and everyone at B Medical Systems is very proud of it."

All active medical cooling solutions from B Medical Systems use natural refrigerants. This allows customers to deploy life-saving cooling solutions in an environmentally friendly manner to keep vaccines, medications, and samples at the correct temperature. At the same time, they keep energy consumption low and the carbon footprint small.

Since 2014, the Energy Star label, supported by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has been recognized by 90% of the US population as an important mark symbolizing a company's commitment to a more energy-efficient future through its products and activities. Over the past 20 years, products with the Energy Star label have contributed to savings of $360 billion on electricity bills and prevented more than 2.5 billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions.
