Making the human body mobile again
Thanks to new technical solutions from ISCAR.
The manufacturing of complex medical components always requires more specialized solutions. Economical machining strategies are in demand for both unique custom pieces and series products. ISCAR continuously develops its tools for demanding applications in medical technology. This covers the entire spectrum of cutting with directed geometry.
ISCAR offers innovative cutting tools for turning, grooving, threading, milling, and drilling. With these, users can produce high-quality instruments and implants – for example, for knee and hip joints. To this end, ISCAR offers mills from the solid carbide (VHM) and MULTI-MASTER program.
These tools leverage the manufacturer's extensive experience in tool and mold making, as implants are typically made from difficult-to-machine materials such as cobalt-chromium alloys or titanium. For pre-machining, FEEDMILL high-feed mills or VHM and MULTI-MASTER ball nose mills are used; for finishing, VHM or MULTI-MASTER ball nose mills in chatter-free design are preferred. Thanks to their uneven tooth spacing, they efficiently dampen vibrations. Especially users of machines with low power achieve high material removal rates with minimal vibration tendency.
Fast machining of femur components
New in the NEOBARREL line of mills are VHM and MULTI-MASTER tools for roughing, finishing, 3D profile milling, and 5-axis simultaneous machining of femur components – that is, for the thigh bone. With significantly reduced cycle times through high feed rates and excellent surface quality thanks to large circle segment cutting, the user achieves high process reliability even with difficult-to-machine workpiece materials.
Due to their high cutting performance, they can produce components in a very short time without compromising the quality of the implants.
Small parts for medical technology
ISCAR also offers suitable tools for cutting machining of rotationally symmetric small parts for medical technology – such as bone nails and screws – on (long) lathes.
Particularly when manufacturing highly precise miniature components like dental implants, special requirements are placed on tools and cutting edges regarding substrate, coatings, chip guides, and tool dimensions.
Specifically for machining small parts on long-turning machines, ISCAR has developed the NEOSWISS quick-change system. It consists of six different tool heads for turning, grooving, threading, and parting. All of them fit onto a single basic holder. The shank remains in the machine during tool changes; the operator simply swaps the tool head – quickly and easily with just one screw. Thanks to a special clamping mechanism and four-point contact, it sits firmly and securely. Calibration or re-alignment are unnecessary. The system is ready for immediate use without any dressing time. ISCAR's range of tools for drilling, milling, and threading on long-turning machines completes the offering.
