Interior spaces of the future: energy efficiency, documentation, and regulatory safety
Whether semiconductor manufacturing or other specialized production processes – cleanrooms ensure quality and safety. However, their implementation is complex and operation energy-intensive. To update the guidelines for planning and operating cleanrooms, VDI is now presenting new drafts of the standards VDI 2083 Part 4.1 and Part 4.2.
In critical areas of technology such as microelectronics, precision mechanics, optics, the food industry, pharmaceutical industry, as well as medical technology, special requirements are placed on the purity of the process environment, operating resources, workstations, personnel, and the materials used. The VDI 2083 series of standards describes tasks and measures in cleanroom technology to ensure these requirements in coordination with internationally applicable standards and other relevant technical rules. Two new drafts provide specialists and planners with a sharpened basis for future projects.
Comprehensive overview in planning, construction, and commissioning through VDI 2083 Part 4.1 E
VDI 2083 Part 4.1 E is oriented around the lifecycle of cleanrooms as investment projects and places particular emphasis on cleanroom-specific aspects. From capturing user requirements to risk analysis and quality assurance measures, to staff training and verification: a holistic approach is the focus. At the same time, the necessary documentation at each project stage is defined to provide project participants with greater planning security.
Energy efficiency as a design task with VDI 2083 Part 4.2 E
Cleanrooms are among the most energy-intensive technical structures – especially when large air volumes are required at high purification quality. VDI 2083 Part 4.2 identifies cleanroom-specific savings potentials and shows how energy use can be reduced during the design, construction, and operation of cleanrooms without compromising safety or quality.
Both standards were published as drafts in May 2025. VDI 2083 Part 4.1 can be purchased from DIN Media for 160.20 EUR. VDI 2083 Part 4.2 can also be purchased from DIN Media for 121.20 EUR.
The objection period ends on December 31, 2025. Objections can be submitted via the objection form (Objection form VDI 2083 Part 4.1 and Objection form VDI 2083 Part 4.2) or by email to the issuing organization (gbg@vdi.de).
