Today, nothing works without microchips and software – and this ensures stable growth in Silicon Saxony. Under the motto “Connect.Exchange.Grow,” more than 400 industry representatives, sector experts, and scientists gathered on June 28, 2022, at the 16th Silicon Saxony Day in Dresden. The main topic: What’s next for Europe’s largest microelectronics location?

Saxony’s high-tech industry with over 73,000 employees

At the meeting of the microelectronics industry, the high-tech industry association Silicon Saxony presented new figures about the industry: They indicate solid and continuous growth. “Currently (2022), 73,000 people work in the Free State in the ICT industry. With 32,550 employees, the largest part is active in the software sector. But other areas such as semiconductor companies or automation and robotics are also steadily growing,” says Dirk Röhrborn, Chairman of Silicon Saxony e.V. The total of 2,600 companies in Saxony’s ICT sector generate a revenue of over 16 billion euros (excluding VAT). “Our industry benefits from the long-term demand for technology, microelectronics, and software,” continues Dirk Röhrborn. Depending on the area, employment growth has been around four to six percent (2020 to 2022) during the pandemic period. In particular, employment numbers in the semiconductor industry remained relatively stable in previous years. “Now, the industry is growing again, and the projected increase in employment does not yet account for this, as companies have only now begun investing in expanding their capacities,” adds Frank Bösenberg, Managing Director of Silicon Saxony e.V.

By 2030: 100,000 employees in microelectronics and ICT

According to their own statements, the industry in Silicon Saxony is developing continuously and steadily. “By the end of the decade, a solid growth to about 100,000 employees in Saxony’s high-tech industry is expected,” says Dirk Röhrborn. “Silicon Saxony stands for self-sustaining growth through long-term investments,” he concludes.
