Everywhere, the discussion about CO2 emissions continues to advance. And rightly so, it is pointed out that there is no universal solution to meet energy demands and further increase global warming. Therefore, everyone is encouraged to contribute within their own area. What becomes a duty for the average citizen should be a matter of course for a company. ELESTA GmbH, as a manufacturer of relays with forced-guided contacts, has addressed this issue and equipped the SIS relay series, consisting of 2- to 6-pole relays, with low-power relay drives. The coil rated powers have been reduced by an average of 33%, and the holding power, necessary for drop operation, e.g., via PWM, by about 50%.

Since these relays are used in circuits that serve functional safety and are often continuously energized during operation, not only the reduced power consumption and thus lower energy use play a role, but also the heat generated by the relay coil. This adds another energy-saving effect. The power loss of the relay coil and the associated self-heating of the switching devices are reduced. Additional measures for heat dissipation can usually be dispensed with as a result.

In the sensitive variants of the SIS relay series, the excitation voltage range of the relay coil is also significantly expanded. This means, for example, that a 24 VDC relay coil of the SIS 2 SEN series can still be operated at around 80 VDC at an ambient temperature of 20°C without overheating. Thus, the operating range can be massively extended upwards by up to 36%.

Thanks to the energy-efficient relay coils, other important relay parameters remain unchanged. Contact reliability, as well as shock and vibration resistance, are not negatively affected in any way by using these energy-saving coils.
