The Battery Show Europe presents from June 28 to 30, 2022, in Stuttgart once again showcasing the latest technologies for the battery and automotive industries. The specialist for electrical and pneumatic automation, SMC, is also loaded with innovative solutions and displays the world's largest range with over 200 product families specifically for automated battery manufacturing: The components have special product features such as: free from copper/zinc, high corrosion resistance, suitable for explosion-proof environments, as well as for use in dry rooms – making them ideally suited for manufacturing processes and beyond.

The leading trade fair for the battery industry once again offers insights into new solutions, including those for E-Vehicles, where battery manufacturing requires high safety and energy efficiency. For this, SMC (Hall 8, Stand D46) presents its broad range of 200 product families, which carry the SMC-specific designation 25A in their names and are optimized for the automated production of rechargeable battery cells (Secondary Batteries). "SMC has been supplying components to leading battery manufacturers worldwide for years," says Achim Gölter, Sales Manager Machinery, SMC Germany GmbH, and adds: "The expertise we have gained is our greatest strength in supporting customers in overcoming new challenges. Our compact and energy-efficient 25A models focus on zinc- and nickel-free materials for battery manufacturing and are suitable for dry rooms with dew points down to -80 °C thanks to special lubricants, ensuring quality and safety." Visitors can see this at the exhibition stand and exchange ideas with SMC experts about suitable solutions – from electrode and cell manufacturing to assembly, integration, inspection, packaging processes, and more.

Great variety with 200 product families

The 25A range includes drives, cylinders, and valves, as well as hoses, connection elements, and vacuum products, up to sensors, switches, and solutions for compressed air preparation. SMC offers components that meet the ATEX directive and are certified as explosion-proof in various protection classes. What the 25A versions have in common, besides the restriction of copper/zinc/nickel materials and suitability for dry rooms, is their high corrosion resistance for battery manufacturing – including highlights such as the 25A-CJ2 compressed air cylinder, the 25A-MXQ compact slide, or the series 25A-AR10-40A pressure regulators.

Small compressed air cylinders for greater flexibility

The round and precise compressed air cylinders of series 25A-CJ2 enable space-saving installation and thus reduce time and maintenance costs even in battery manufacturing processes: Fine adjustment of the signal generator is easy by loosening the screw, and mounting options include double foot mounting, flange at the back, or double centering pin. The series is available with piston diameters of 6, 10, and 16 mm and has recently been expanded with a 6-mm version that offers the option to connect the cylinder cover vertically to the axis – providing even more flexibility.

Pneumatic compact slide for greater precision

With the latest generation of compact slides from series 25A-MXQ, SMC has further reduced weight and dimensions and significantly increased versatility in use: Four different housing and stroke limit options, as well as numerous functional options, allow almost any application to be covered by the standard program. One of the housing type options – series MXQ-B – is additionally designed for high rigidity and is among the most precise pneumatic compact slides on the market. The particularly small and lightweight components also support the approach of using space-saving designs in battery manufacturing.

Modular energy-saving regulator for high compressed air quality

Insufficient cleaning of compressed air from dirt particles negatively affects machines and systems as well as product quality during electrode or battery cell production. As part of the maintenance unit of series AC – consisting of filter, regulator, and lubricator – the modular energy-saving filter series 25A-AR10-40A ensures high compressed air quality and process safety in various pneumatic applications. Compared to other models, the pressure drop has been improved by up to 50%, for example, in the AR20-02-A model.

Efficient ionizers as well as cooling and temperature control devices

The expanded product range includes handy ionizers for reducing electrostatic electricity for particle-free manufacturing – such as series IZT40/41/42 (rod version) and IZT43 (nozzle version), now also available with IO-Link. Additionally, powerful cooling/temperature control devices ensure the correct operating temperature, especially in laser applications. Particularly noteworthy are the stand-alone systems of series HRS and the rack-mountable products of series HRR, which score in battery manufacturing with high temperature stability.
