First fully automated sample handling solution for measuring clinical samples using ICP-MS

clinPAL – Automation that keeps your back free

With the clinPAL from Analytik Jena (www.analytik-jena.com), medical-technical laboratories are now offered a fully automated solution for sample preparation and handling in the field of clinical research for measurement using ICP-MS. The device is tailored to the typical workflow for analyzing human samples such as plasma, serum, urine, and whole blood. Through the optimized and reproducible process, sources of error are minimized, ensuring accurate analytical results. The new "Pal" in the laboratory saves valuable resources.

The ICP-MS is one of the most powerful techniques in trace element analysis. However, most steps of sample preparation and processing in clinical sample analysis have traditionally been performed manually. This makes the process time-consuming and costly, and also prone to errors. The clinPAL from Analytik Jena automates the entire workflow of clinical sample preparation and handling, freeing laboratory staff to focus on other tasks.

The core of the clinPAL is the dilutor head, which transports the sample containers to the integrated barcode reader and vortex modules, and is equipped with a needle for working with sample solutions. Unlike conventional autosamplers for ICP-MS, the robust sample needle allows piercing septa, so the clinPAL does not require the usual protective cover to prevent particles from entering from the laboratory air. During the workflow, the sample needle is cleaned from both outside and inside to prevent cross-contamination. Thanks to a novel metal-free coating, contamination of samples by the needle material is also avoided.

Device-side teamwork

The clinPAL is integrated into the software of the Plasma Quant MS, ASpect MS. Through this interface, sample information from the barcode reader is transferred to the ASpect MS and automatically linked with the results, thus preventing mix-ups—such as swapping tubes during sample preparation. An integrated flow injection system with a switching valve ensures rapid and contamination-free sample introduction. While one sample is being measured, the clinPAL prepares the next sample. This not only ensures optimal timing but also provides reproducible sample handling.

Ready to use

Thanks to the modular system, the sample capacity of the clinPAL can be adapted to individual throughput requirements. Manual preparation steps are eliminated, saving valuable laboratory space: samples can be placed directly onto the device. There is no need to transfer samples into intermediate containers, as the clinPAL works with conventional blood collection tubes. The system also includes a barcode reader, a vortex module for optimal homogenization of the original and diluted samples, a switching valve for injecting the measurement solution, and a washing station for cleaning the sample needle.

Reliable measurement results

The clinPAL from Analytik Jena ensures ideal laboratory utilization and reliable results at the same time. The optimized and reproducible workflow minimizes sources of error and guarantees precise analytical outcomes. The completely metal-free flow path, free of any contamination sources, also ensures result security. With the clinPAL, clinical laboratories can elevate their trace element analysis to the next level and meet any analytical and economic challenge—now and in the future.
