CWS, Emdion, and Dr. Becker Klinik Norddeich test digital hygiene checkpoint for hospital guests
With temperature measurement and mask check against COVID-19
After a period of many restrictions, clinics, rehabilitation, and care facilities are reopening their doors to visitors and relatives. To protect staff as well as residents and patients during the coronavirus pandemic, responsible actions and innovative ideas are needed: ideas like the new hygiene checkpoint Liward®, developed by sensor technology specialist Emdion and distributed by hygiene expert CWS. As part of a pilot project, it is currently being used at the Dr. Becker Clinic Norddeich. The hygiene checkpoint identifies people with elevated temperatures or individuals without face masks already when entering the buildings.
Anyone entering the Dr. Becker Clinic Norddeich these days feels a step closer to the future. In the entrance area of the rehabilitation clinic, a so-called hygiene checkpoint "Liward" installed by the partner companies CWS and Emdion is operational. Those who enter here can voluntarily undergo a brief temperature check using the digital temperature detector.
This aims to protect both the clinic staff and patients of psychosomatic and orthopedic rehabilitation from COVID-19 infection.
"As an innovation driver in hygiene, we want to support the fight against the coronavirus with forward-looking ideas and solutions," emphasizes Frank Reisgies, General Manager Hygiene Core Business at CWS. "The hygiene checkpoint, which we are bringing to market in cooperation with Emdion, is a promising step. If the current practical test continues to be successful, the solution can help make life safer during the Corona pandemic," Reisgies continues.
The Liward hygiene checkpoint contains extensive sensor technology expertise. Emdion GmbH, a manufacturer of security technology, communication, and automation systems from Emden, Lower Saxony, developed the product. The digital health assistant is now to be made accessible to a broad customer base together with CWS, as hygiene experts with strong market proximity. With their cooperation, the partners aim to contribute to greater health and safety — especially given the still not permanently stable infection rates.
The added safety: temperature check and mask verifier
The health assistant is approximately the size of a passport photo booth. It is positioned in covered entrance areas. As soon as a person approaches the hygiene checkpoint, sensors measure the face temperature contactlessly. If the measured temperature is below a set threshold, the door to the interior opens automatically. If the value is higher, the person is informed via voice message, and the device signals the clinic staff. They then discuss the further procedure with the individual.
"The hygiene checkpoint helps ensure that only persons without elevated body temperature enter the building," explains Stefan Szymanski, responsible for sales and project management at Emdion. The device can also perform additional optional functions. For example, the hygiene barrier can detect whether a person entering the building is wearing a face mask. Both features facilitate the control and implementation of legally required hygiene measures. Further optional modules, such as detecting whether hand disinfection has been performed, will follow in the coming weeks.
Bernd Hamann, Administrative Director of the Dr. Becker Clinic Norddeich, is already satisfied: "The hygiene checkpoint complements our safety concept," he states. "We have adjusted many clinic processes and established strict hygiene rules, developed in consultation with the German Advisory Center for Hygiene. We are generally open to innovations. We gladly accepted the offer of our cooperation partner CWS to serve as a pilot clinic for Liward."
Versatile applications
The possibilities for use are practically unlimited. "The health detector is suitable for schools, universities, office and commercial buildings, government offices, banks, clinics, department stores, supermarkets — to name just a few examples," reports CWS project manager Karolin Rohmer, Director Group Product Lines Hygiene & Floorcare at CWS. While Germany continues to relax COVID restrictions, CWS and Emdion, with their new product, contribute to keeping the virus under control.
