Compact powerhouse
SMC presents new cooling and temperature control device HRS040 with 3.8 kW
Whether in research, development, or manufacturing: To ensure optimal performance and product quality during operation of machine applications, extremely narrow temperature windows must sometimes be maintained – and in confined spaces. The new cooling and temperature control device HRS040 from SMC offers maximum performance with minimized machine size. It helps users, among others in the automotive industry, mechanical engineering, or medical technology, to improve processes and achieve optimal process quality with maximum machine performance.
The leading provider of pneumatic and electrical automation technology, SMC, thus expands its range with a compact powerhouse that, thanks to precise temperature regulation using multiple expansion valves (cooling/heating) and sensors (supply/return), achieves very accurate temperature stability of ±0.1 °C. Due to the PID control, only a small vessel for the circulating medium is needed – and the machine size remains as small as possible (W: 377 mm x H: 676 mm x D: 592 mm). With a cooling capacity of 3.8 kW, the HRS040 is part of the HRS series, with a height of less than one meter and a temperature setting range from 5 to 40 °C. Overall, the HRS range consists of seven sizes with cooling capacities from 1.1 kW to 4.9 kW (50 Hz). All devices use environmentally friendly refrigerants (R407C and R410A).
HRS040 – Power lies in its compactness
The air- or water-cooled standalone solution for indoor use does not skimp on performance, only on space: While many previous models have multiple air-cooled condensers on the top/bottom, a double condenser design in the HRS040 reduces the product height – and at the same time increases cooling capacity. Additionally, the system scores points in terms of energy efficiency: The heating function does not require an electric heating element, as the circulating medium is heated by the process heat (hot gas) from the compressor. When the temperature approaches the freezing point – for example during particularly cold winter nights – the pump automatically generates heat by circulating the medium, thus preventing possible frost damage. The auto-restart function allows the HRS040 device to restart the system independently after a power outage.
Extensive control, low-maintenance operation
The entire operation of the cooling and temperature control device is continuously monitored by an integrated controller, which informs about potential malfunctions using 35 different alarm codes. These codes not only enable quick assistance from customer service but also indicate necessary maintenance for the pump or fan. The actual and target values, as well as other parameters, can be conveniently set and read via the large digital display.
Further clever features keep maintenance effort as low as possible. For example, a sloped fill opening combined with a clearly visible fill level indicator makes filling the circulating medium easier. The use of a magnetic pump reduces maintenance intervals and makes regular checks for pump leaks unnecessary. Inspection and cleaning of the air-cooled condenser can be performed without tools. The integrated dust filter can be easily installed and removed thanks to the magnetic connection and can be conveniently cleaned. For particularly dusty environments, additional disposable filters are available, which can be replaced quickly – saving time and effort during cleaning.
Versatile application spectrum in industry
For the necessary mobility, castors are standardly mounted and can be dismantled at any time. The cooling and temperature control device can be placed close to walls – enabled by front and rear ventilation. With the versatile HRS040 cooling and temperature control device, SMC has developed a lightweight, space-saving powerhouse that offers users maximum application and operational safety and demonstrates its versatility across numerous industrial applications.
Automotive and mechanical engineering (e.g., cooling welders, vacuum pumps, and UV drying systems), laser technology (e.g., temperature control in laser beam machines and metal 3D printers), or medical technology (e.g., temperature regulation in X-ray devices, electron microscopes, and reagent coolers) are just some of the areas where the compact system ensures optimized process quality. Its particularly high temperature stability helps in medical applications to produce clear and detailed X-ray images without fluctuations in the digital signal – enabling more precise diagnoses.
