CleanLab 2020
Innovative laboratory for cleanliness analyses and purity-related research tasks at Fraunhofer IPA
From mid-September, the Fraunhofer IPA will have the purity-optimized laboratory "CleanLab 2020" available to address, among other things, the following cleanliness-related topics using state-of-the-art laboratory infrastructure:
Cleanliness Analyses
- Cleanliness analysis of automotive components for particulate contamination (determination of technical cleanliness/rest contamination according to VDA 19 or ISO 16232)
- Cleanliness analyses of medical technology products and other contamination-sensitive products from the semiconductor industry, aerospace, etc., for particulate contamination
- Evaluation of particle fallout (environmental monitoring) to detect settling particles or to locate particle-generating manufacturing processes
- Evaluation of tape lift samples to examine surfaces for particulate contamination
Assessment of Cleaning Procedures
- Automated CO2 snow jet cleaning
- Cleaning with supercritical CO2
Personnel Training
- Inspector for technical cleanliness
- Planner for technical cleanliness
- Manufacturing under clean conditions
Research Questions Focused on Particle Analysis (e.g., contact transfer of contaminants, cleanability, etc.)
To investigate these questions, several cleanliness-optimized areas can be utilized, ranging from the extraction area in a turbulent cleanroom of class 8 air cleanliness, to the highly pure extraction and analysis area in the laminar cleanroom with class 3 air cleanliness (according to ISO 14644-1). This testing environment provides the suitable setting for comprehensive, modern equipment for particle analysis (see figure). The use of the already existing and established CO2 snow jet cleaning process in the "Pure and Micro Production" department, along with additional analysis options, is guaranteed through access to the already existing reference cleanroom of ISO air cleanliness class 1.
