Cleaning in the vicinity of cleanrooms

Clear procedures for office areas and common rooms

For office and welfare areas in the vicinity of cleanrooms, the cleaning scope, materials, and access should be agreed upon in advance. (“AI-generated symbolic image, created with OpenAI. It does not show an actual SylviClean location, a customer order, or a classified cleanroom.”)

Where a cleanroom is operated, offices, meeting rooms, entrances, and staff areas are often part of the site as well. These adjacent areas require a coordinated cleaning plan. It is essential for operators and cleaning service providers to clearly define responsibilities, access routes, and materials. General building cleaning and cleaning inside a classified cleanroom remain separate tasks.

Clarify responsibilities before the first assignment

The process should begin with a joint inspection. Which rooms are included in the contract? Which doors and transitions may cleaning staff use? Where do areas begin for which special operational requirements apply? A room directory and an easy-to-understand plan help make these boundaries clear in day-to-day work.

The requirements within a cleanroom are determined by its use and the operator’s specifications. VDI addresses the special requirements for personnel and clothing in guideline VDI 2083 Part 15. An assignment to clean adjacent office rooms is therefore not authorization to enter or clean a cleanroom.

Assign materials to the agreed areas

For general building cleaning, cloths, covers, and equipment should be assigned to the defined work areas and clearly labeled. Storage, reprocessing, and transport should also be included in the coordination process. The operator determines which materials are permitted at which transitions. Cleaning carts from office or sanitary areas must not be brought into areas with special cleanliness requirements without explicit approval.

Publications by Fraunhofer IPA also illustrate that operating equipment and consumables for cleanrooms must be considered separately. The suitability of a product for ordinary office areas does not imply its suitability for cleanroom processes.

Describe services and time windows specifically

A service specification should list rooms, areas, activities, and intervals. For office and staff areas, for example, floor care, cleaning accessible surfaces, waste containers, or kitchenettes can be agreed upon. Sanitary areas should have their own procedure tailored to their use. The selection of products and methods is based on surfaces, manufacturer’s specifications, and operational requirements.

The times of service also deserve attention. Cleaning, movement of goods, and shift changes should be coordinated with one another. General building cleaning remains within its defined scope of work. Separate instructions from the operator apply to airlocks and controlled areas; they are not automatically included in office cleaning.

Document changes and feedback

Both sides need designated contacts for queries. New room layouts, changed usage times, or temporarily blocked access routes should be communicated before the next assignment. A brief service record can document which agreed tasks were completed and where an area was inaccessible. It does not replace a cleanroom-specific inspection or approval.

During a joint review of the cleaning plan, it can be checked whether the intervals and scope of services still suit the site. This creates a transparent organization for the adjacent areas, while responsibility for cleanroom operation and its special requirements remains with the operator and the specialists commissioned for this purpose.
