Building Information Modeling – Correctly determine information requirements

VDI Guideline VDI/bs 2552 Sheet 11.1
VDI Guideline VDI/bs 2552 Sheet 11.1 "Building Information Modeling – Information Exchange Requirements for BIM Use Cases"

In the practice of information exchange with BIM data, it has been shown that difficulties often occur when the information requirements (so-called Exchange Requirements – ERs) are not sufficiently described.

The VDI 2552 Part 11.1 adapts and develops practical methods for defining ERs based on existing BIM data exchange standards, which are also implementable in software and provide a basis for technical certificates. This could also serve as a starting point for a growing collection of concrete solutions for typical buildings and project types in the future.

In all phases of a construction project, the project participants generate, make available, and reuse information. To describe the specifications of this information, which a specific role needs for a particular BIM process in a BIM project, the Information Delivery Manual (IDM) is used.

This guideline forms the basis for creating an IDM within the VDI/bS 2552 Part 11 series. It is primarily aimed at clients and participants involved in planning, construction, operation, and maintenance. Each guideline in this series considers a practical application case and describes the associated processes, data, and information exchange requirements.

The publisher of the guideline VDI 2552 Part 11.1 "Building Information Modeling – Information exchange requirements for BIM use cases" is the VDI Society for Building and Building Services (GBG). The guideline was published as a white paper in October 2021, replacing the draft from September 2020. It can be ordered at a price starting from EUR 108.40 from Beuth Verlag (Tel.: +49 30 2601-2260). Online orders are possible at www.vdi.de/2552-11-1 or www.beuth.de. VDI members receive a 10 percent discount on all VDI guidelines. VDI guidelines can be viewed free of charge at many public consultation points.
