Anniversary at Syntegon: 30 Years of Pharmatec GmbH in Dresden

For 30 years, Pharmatec, a subsidiary of Syntegon, has been manufacturing in Dresden systems for the production, distribution, and storage of pure media, as well as state-of-the-art formulation and bioprocess systems, including future-proof automation solutions.

At the well-attended anniversary celebration, over 300 guests from staff, relatives, alumni, as well as politics and business, spent a relaxed day.

In summer weather, the Dresden factory grounds provided the perfect setting for a versatile program, including food stalls, live music, and children's activities.

Syntegon subsidiary Pharmatec has reason to celebrate: For three decades now, the company has been successfully producing pure media systems and process equipment for the pharmaceutical industry at its Dresden location. On this occasion, Pharmatec hosted a big anniversary celebration on June 30th. More than 300 guests from staff, relatives, alumni, as well as politics and business, accepted the invitation to Elisabeth-Boer-Straße 3. "All colleagues have contributed a lot over the past years to further strengthen Pharmatec and Syntegon's good position in the international market—and thus make the Dresden site an important contact point for our customers," says Dr. Matthias Wagner, Managing Director of Pharmatec and Head of the Pharma Processing Business Unit at Syntegon.

Family-friendly working conditions

With a bouncy castle, craft corner, go-kart track, burger bar, and live music, there was plenty for guests—including over 100 children—which underscores the orientation and engagement of the Dresden site for Dietmar Paul, a member of Pharmatec's management: "Family-friendliness at Pharmatec is not just demonstrated once a year. We consistently align ourselves with the needs of our employees with children." Furthermore, Pharmatec in Dresden offers several apprenticeship positions each year in the fields of plant mechanics and mechatronics. "We are also currently looking for new colleagues to support us in the challenging—and very exciting—work around our process and pure media systems," says Paul.

Significant investments in sustainability

The importance of the site is also reflected in its infrastructure: Recently, Syntegon made the largest single investment in Pharmatec's 30-year history with a new building services system. This has streamlined the plant technology and created a modern operational and sanitation concept. Additionally, a new photovoltaic system has been installed, along with an expanded parking lot with charging stations for electric vehicles and bikes. "At Pharmatec in Dresden, all signs point to growth," says Wagner. "The current investments underline the relevance of our location and products for the Syntegon Group and the global pharmaceutical industry."

Pure media and process systems from Dresden for the world

For 30 years now, Pharmatec has been manufacturing systems in Dresden for the production, distribution, and storage of pure media. Moreover, pharmaceutical companies worldwide receive state-of-the-art formulation and bioprocess systems, along with future-proof automation solutions, from a single source. "The quality hallmark 'made in Germany' still holds very high value for our customers," says Wagner. In Dresden, both standard systems and customer-specific plants are manufactured. An example is the SVP Essential, the standardized base version of the proven SVP process systems, which allowed Syntegon to respond very quickly to short-term demands during the COVID-19 crisis. Additionally, Pharmatec has helped shape a new trend with the MWFI system for the "cold" membrane-based production of pure water, ultrapure water, and water for injection purposes.

Positive future prospects

What began 30 years ago with four people is now an integral part of Syntegon's portfolio and the manufacturing halls of pharmaceutical companies. Pharmatec was founded in 1993 by Fresenius AG to meet its internal demand for pharmaceutical process systems. This quickly led to the first external orders, and the company grew. In 2007, it was acquired by Bosch Packaging Technology (now Syntegon). Currently, around 200 employees work at Pharmatec in Dresden; production has been continuously located at the current site since 2009.

Wagner looks positively into the future: "In the coming years, we also want to grow and further expand our offerings, especially in the field of biotechnology." The focus will be on increased automation and the further development of modular process systems. "We can all be proud of the contribution our systems make in the market. Ultimately, we help our customers produce medicines that improve the lives of patients worldwide," concludes Wagner.
