RAUMEDIC Neurovent: Medical technology with microchip technology – Made in Zwönitz

On July 1, 2016, a memorable day for RAUMEDIC marked its twentieth anniversary. The location of RAUMEDIC AG in Zwönitz celebrated its 20th birthday. However, the history of the medical technology plant began much earlier.

The roots of the Zwönitz plant of RAUMEDIC AG go even further back in history. As early as the 1980s, the first pressure measurement probes were developed at the then VEB Measuring Devices Plant Zwönitz. After the political change, in 1996, the polymer specialist REHAU AG + Co took over the business suitable for its own medical division. In 2004, the plant in Zwönitz was renamed RAUMEDIC AG. The company, headquartered in Helmbrechts (Bavaria), employs 680 people worldwide and focuses on extrusion, injection molding, and assembly of products for the medical technology and pharmaceutical industries.

"Three engineers and three manufacturing employees were involved in 1996," recalls Production Manager Jens Rausendorf. Today, 26 employees work at the Zwönitz site. They develop and produce highly precise pressure measurement systems, primarily for neurosurgery.

With the NEUROVENT brain pressure probe, RAUMEDIC is the market leader in German clinics. Furthermore, the catheters produced in Zwönitz are used worldwide. Whether in Europe, Brazil, the USA, or Australia – neurosurgeons around the world trust the measurement technology "Made by RAUMEDIC".

The extremely complex catheters are assembled manually with great dexterity and a high sense of quality by experienced employees. It takes two weeks to complete the numerous steps involved in manufacturing a microchip catheter. In hospitals, these catheters are mainly used for severe head injuries or hydrocephalus syndrome. When swelling causes the pressure in the brain to become too high, it can lead to permanent damage. RAUMEDIC's catheters measure this pressure and make therapy easier for the treating physician.

Andy Kehrer and Elvira Haberkorn from the Zwönitz city administration, as well as Anne Walter from the Zwönitz Weekly Newspaper, showed great admiration during the brief tour of the plant. "You wouldn't even know what innovative products are manufactured here in Zwönitz!" they expressed in amazement during the tour. They congratulated warmly on the anniversary and wished RAUMEDIC continued success.
