Werner Straub
Werner Straub, born 1947, married, 2 adult daughters, residing in Männedorf on Lake Zurich.
Head of Cleanroom Technology Sales at Cofely AG.
After studying, he spent 7 years working for Luwa AG in Singapore, constructing large systems for the textile industry. Subsequently, he took on the international development of cleanroom technology at Luwa and successfully built systems for Philips, Roche, and others in Asia at the end of the "pioneering cleanroom era" from Switzerland. Later, after the fall of the Berlin Wall, he helped upgrade the pharmaceutical industry in Poland to GMP standards.
He is currently a member of ISO TC209 and is Convenor of WG9, a working group for classifying surface cleanliness based on particle concentration (ISO 14644-9). Soon, he will initiate another ISO working group WG12, which deals with surface cleaning in cleanrooms.
He has been a member of SwissCCS (SRRT) for many years and has been managing the secretariat since last year.
He also conducts SwissCCS training in contamination control and is employed as a guest lecturer at ZHAW (Zurich University of Applied Sciences) for cleanroom technology in the Institute of Biotechnology/Pharmaceuticals under Prof. Dr. Tobias Merseburger.
Additional memberships: ISPE (International Society of Pharmaceutical Engineering), Medical Cluster, working group SWKI VA101-01 guideline for air filters, and SWKI VA105-01 (99-3) for air conditioning systems in hospital buildings.
What did you want to become as a child?
Pilot – Unfortunately, this dream was thwarted by my color blindness...
What was your first car?
A Fiat 600, built in 1960, freshly painted and lowered together with my father. It had 2 engines, one of which was higher compression, requiring the crankshaft bearings to be replaced monthly.
What do you look forward to?
Many things, including holidays with my wife, a good concert, the smell of hay or freshly mown grass...
What achievement are you particularly proud of?
Having achieved several very different things, including the realization of textile factories in Asia, helping to establish the first semiconductor plant for Philips in Shanghai/China, pharmaceutical factories in China and Poland, and numerous musical performances in various formations.
Which technical achievement do you admire most?
Generally, the technological development and achievements of the last 50 years – can it continue like this?...
Who would you like to swap places with for a month?
No one, I like how things are...
In which country would you like to have a second residence?
Perhaps in Southern Italy, I like the Mediterranean lifestyle, preferably with a view of the sea...
Who would you have liked to meet?
Beethoven – I wanted to learn more about his imaginary sound world. As a deaf musician/composer, he created wonderful musical works...
Which book would you recommend right now?
"More than Honey," a book (and film) "about the life and survival of bees," by Markus Imhof and Claus-Peter Lieckenfeld
What is your favorite food?
Something with cheese, e.g., very simply: fondue or Swiss Army cheese slices
What is your favorite music?
Well-played music from classical to funk – I play in 2 music groups: the Apaches, a Shadows cover band (instrumental guitar rock), and for the past 3 years, a Swiss folk music group playing Schwyzerörgeli on the double bass
What was the best advice you ever received?
"Nid lafere – tue liefere" – in German: don't just talk – act
Do you have a motto?
Do I need one? I have none: only an insight: "It is what it is" and accept people as they are...
