Dr.-Ing. Markus Rochowicz

Born in 1967 in Stuttgart
Studied physics in Stuttgart, diploma completed in 1997
Completed PhD at the University of Stuttgart in 2010 on the topic "Filter Centrifuge for Gravimetric Analysis of Particles in Suspensions"
Markus Rochowicz has been responsible for purity issues in production as a group leader for purity technology since 2008 in the Reinst- and Microproduction Department at Fraunhofer IPA in Stuttgart, working with his team. Prior to that, he was active as a research associate in the field of cleanroom production since 1997 and has been co-responsible since 2000 for establishing the topic of technical cleanliness as an analysis, consulting, and training service of the institute. The current standards for technical cleanliness, VDA 19.1, VDA 19.2, and ISO 16232, have been significantly shaped by his contributions. Current topics include cleanliness validation in medical technology and the measurement of film contamination in the automotive industry.

What did you want to be as a child?
Firefighter in kindergarten, then marine researcher in elementary school

What was your first car?
A 1975 Ford Granada for 350 marks

What do you look forward to?
I am lucky to enjoy going to work at IPA in the mornings and to be happy to return home to my family in the evenings.

What achievement are you particularly proud of?
I am pleased that the topic of "technical cleanliness," which we have been developing for about 15 years, has gained such widespread adoption in industry and that we have created many jobs with it (although our institute actually deals with automation).

Which technical achievement do you admire the most?
Definitely the internal combustion engine and the development of the automobile over the last 125 years. Although it is certainly a technology with both bright and dark sides, it has greatly shaped our lives in many aspects such as work and leisure and is largely responsible for the success of our economy.

Whom would you like to swap places with for a month?
With my wife, then I could see myself from a different perspective, which certainly wouldn't hurt.

In which country would you like to have a second residence?
In Provence, in the south of France: close to mountains and the sea, better weather than here, and not too long a journey.

Who would you like to have met?
The Monty Pythons in their early years.

Which book would you currently recommend?
VDA 19 Part 1 and 2 on technical cleanliness

What is your favorite food?
Difficult, there are many delicious dishes... but I can always look forward to a fresh butter pretzel in the morning.

What is your favorite music?
I can't say, it depends on the occasion and mood.

What was the best advice you ever received?
From my then four-year-old son: Quit smoking

Do you have a motto?
There are always multiple chances in life.
