Arnold Brunner
Arnold Brunner completed an apprenticeship as a roofer and sanitary installer. After further training as a certified sanitary technician and a language stay in England, he worked in Saudi Arabia. This was followed by two years of project work at a large engineering firm before he trained as a certified HVAC engineer at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences.
He then gained several years of professional experience at a smaller engineering firm specializing in hospital planning before founding Brunner Building Services Ltd in 1988.
In 1989, he obtained the Register A diploma (Masters Degree in Engineering). He led Brunner Building Services Ltd for 23 years and is still active as a Senior Consultant in his former company.
Since 1994, Mr. Brunner has been actively working for SWKI and as a Swiss delegate on standardization projects of VDI, CEN, and ISO.
He has been a board member of the Swiss Society for Cleanroom Technology for 18 years.
In 2008, he received the VDI Honor Plaque in recognition of his efforts in the fields of indoor air technology and cleanroom technology.
Since 2012, Arnold Brunner has been a full-time lecturer with a 50% workload in Building Technology at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences, Department of Engineering & Architecture. His many years of qualified professional experience in building services engineering and cleanroom planning are of great benefit to him in this role.
What did you want to become as a child?
I wanted to become a farmer, but my father had other plans for me.
What was your first car?
For a trip to Scandinavia, my brother and I bought a 2CV (Duck) for 50 Swiss Francs, with the promise to pay another 50 Francs if we made it across the border. We paid, because we managed to travel via the Netherlands to northern Finland and back.
What do you look forward to?
Seeing my beloved snow mountains in the morning (only in clear weather); an evening with friends over a good meal.
What achievement are you particularly proud of?
I am proud of my professional successes and experiences, which I now pass on to young professionals at the university.
Which technical achievement do you admire most?
Galileo Galilei was a brilliant thinker.
Who would you like to swap places with for a month?
I look forward to traveling in Canada for a month this summer.
In which country would you like to have a second residence?
In Hamburg, Oslo, or Melbourne.
Who would you like to meet?
I would have liked to share a Bistecca alla Fiorentina with Leonardo da Vinci.
Which book would you currently recommend?
"The Art of Clear Thinking: 52 Thinking Errors You Better Leave to Others" by Rolf Dobelli.
What is your favorite food?
Grilled veal chop with rosemary potatoes, a mixed leaf salad with Italian dressing beforehand, and a glass of Rioja.
What is your favorite music?
I love rock, but also Vivaldi and Bach, up to Zulu choir singing and natural yodeling.
What was the best advice you ever received?
Take time for the "saw sharpening".

Do it once - do it right.
